SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM
The Foundation’s Scholarship Program, which was the basis for the Foundation’s formation three decades ago, was established to provide children of qualifying Supply Corps personnel financial assistance to pursue a college education. Foundation scholarships are for high school seniors and college undergraduate students, students attending accredited community college/technical school, and spouses.
Today, any family member (child, grandchild or spouse) of a qualifying Supply Corps officer and child or spouse of a supply enlisted member (active duty, reservist, or retired) is eligible for consideration to receive financial assistance for undergraduate studies at an accredited two or four-year post-secondary school institution.
In response to the Global War on Terror after September 11, 2001, the NSCF established memorial scholarships in the amount of $10,000.00 for each of the minor children of a Supply Corps Officer who dies while on Active Duty. In 2022, the amount for memorial scholarships was increased to $20,000. The program applies to Active Duty Supply Corps Officers, any Reserve Supply Corps Officer in the following categories: Mobilization, Active Duty for Special Work (ADSW), Active Duty for Training (ADT), Annual Training (AT) and Inactive Duty for Training (IDT).
The scholarship application consists of three primary components: academic performance records, extracurricular activities, and two short essay questions. The Scholarship selection process is simple. Identifying information is redacted, and judges look at the overall value of each candidate.
The Foundation Scholarship Committee convenes a special board consisting of one person each from the Active Duty, Reserve, Retired, Enlisted, and spouse communities. The Scholarship Board individually reviews and critiques each application and then meets as a virtual Scholarship Board to collectively select the best candidates. Applicants are considered for awards on the basis of character, leadership, academic performance, and financial need.
The Scholarship Program has steadily grown over the past three decades, due in large part to the generosity and efforts of regional chapters, spouses’ clubs, and individual Supply Corps officers. In 1971, six one-year $250 scholarships were offered; today, the Foundation’s goal is to award $250,000 in scholarships each year. Since 1971, the Foundation has awarded 2,698 scholarships valued in excess of $6,546,000.
